Experiment 1: Thinx (Period Panties) Day 1

Now this may seem like an odd place to start. What do Thinx period panties have to do with fitness?

Everything.

Every woman with a period has had an embarrassing story about her period. I've got more than one.  As a woman who works out regularly, I hate that week of bleeding. Not only because of the cramps and the bloating, but also because it's a perfect storm. You forget to change your tampon soon enough, or you bleed through it quickly, and you end up with a new embarrassing story.

So when I heard about Thinx, I knew I had to try them.

I'm going to go ahead and post a link to the Thinx website, if you use this link, you will automatically get $10 off and give me $10 for new product. If you don't want the $10, here's a link to their website without any benefit to either of us.

I read a few blog posts from women who had tried the underwear. They were all really glowing reviews. But I noticed in the comments section there were a lot of skeptical women and even some who had claimed to try thinx. The period panties on amazon.com also had some low star reviews, so I decided to go with the main brand on this.

I went ahead and bought 7 pairs of Thinx in order to get a 20% off discount, I also went to www.retailmenot.com and got a discount code for $5 off on top of that. It was still pretty expensive. I would never have spent over $100 on underwear for my period, but these were special and I had to know.

I have dreams of never using a pad or tampon again, you guys. All women have to understand this.  None of us enjoy shoving a wad of cotton up in our bodies, nor do we enjoy bleeding into a pseudo-diaper. Periods are freaking annoying, and they are still hard to talk about because of the social stigma. But we're getting over it. I digress...

I bought my thinx after measuring myself with a tape measure, I found myself to be a small in the hips and a medium in the waist. I decided to buy smalls anyway because I'd rather plan for weight loss (another experiment I'm about to blog about) than be stuck with underwear too large.

Hip Hugger Style Panties (from Thinx Website)
It took about 5 days for the underwear to show up. I got 3 of the hip hugger style (supposed to hold 2 tampons worth of blood), 2 sports (1.5 tampons worth) and 2 thongs (a half tampon worth of blood).

I wore the first hip hugger on the day my period was supposed to start. I took some photos of how they fit on me. I'm still deciding if I want to post those or not. We'll see.

My period did not show up. In fact, it was 4 days late this month (stress), so I ended up wearing the thinx thong too, hoping to at least catch the early bleeding but even then it was late, so I got to see what it was like wearing them on non-period days. They're a little thicker than my usual underwear, and *WARNING ABOUT TO TALK ABOUT GROSS BODILY FLUIDS SO IF YOU'RE EASILY OFFENDED STOP READING HERE* I thought they would soak in any.. discharge or normal vaginal fluids like a pad would, but they didn't.

My period finally started yesterday. Of course I was not wearing my thinx when it started. I'd all but given up on the old friend to show up, but much to my great relief, Aunt Flow arrived!

So I slept in my hip huggers last night. No leakage, no blood on my sheets!!! My first two days are always the heaviest, so I woke up around 7 am, switched into my 2nd pair of hip huggers and so far have found them to be successful at keeping the blood contained.

One blogger said she felt dry and did not feel like her period was happening at all. So far, that is not the case for me. If I go to the bathroom, I am not enjoying the sensation I get when I pull my thinx back on. It feels a little cold and a little damp... almost like I am putting wet panties on.  Sort of like if you were to fill up a sanitary pad and put it back on instead of changing it. Skeeves me out a little.

Today is my first full day wearing the Thinx, so I will keep you all posted on how the rest of the week goes. I will be wearing these during my workouts, and I will be focusing on those moments in future posts.  I am determined to try these out exclusively for the 5-7 days I have my period, so I will keep you all up-to-date as we go!

Introductions

My name is Caitlin. I'm a personal trainer and own my own company, Caitlin Hart Training. I also have another blog where I discuss all sorts of subjects related to training. This blog will be exclusively dedicated to the different fitness and fitness-related products I try out. I will test different products, review them and give you guys my honest and blunt opinion on each product I try.

I got this idea because I have always used myself as a guinea pig when trying out different fitness brand clothes, or diets, or other products. I won't recommend anything to my private clients unless I have tried it first and like it. I am not being paid or given free products at this time, so all my reviews will be completely unbiased.

My only goal is to put the knowledge I'm already collecting out there on the internet so that others may benefit from my own personal experiments.

Enjoy!
